Weapons and kit Best sniper for mid-range in WARDOGS: SKS, SVD or SV98

Which WARDOGS rifle suits mid-range fights? Compare the SKS, SVD, SV98 and Mosin after the Season 2 damage changes, with optics and tips.

"What is the best sniper for mid-range?" is a question we hear a lot on squad nights. The short answer is that for most players the SVD is the best all-round pick, the SKS is the best cheap one, and the SV98 is the one to aim for if you enjoy bolt-action rifles. The reasons matter more than the ranking, so here is how to choose.

This guide was checked against Season 2 (Update 0.2.0). It is about mid-range fights, such as covering an objective from a building or a ridge. For the wider debate between rifle types, see Snipers vs Marksman Rifles in WARDOGS.

What Season 2 changed for these rifles

Season 2 softened the heavy calibres. .308 is down 25%, 7.62x54mmR 20%, 7.62x39mm 19% and .50 Cal 16%, and snipers get extra hit-location damage to compensate. Bulkhead's stated aim for marksman rifles is that headshots and upper-body hits are slightly weaker, so DMRs sit between assault rifles and snipers.

In practice, the SKS and SVD are less forgiving than they were in Season 1. Third-party breakdowns report that both need more chest hits than before, so aim for the head or plan for a follow-up shot. Bolt-actions kept their one-shot potential. A headshot is still the main way to win a fast duel with them.

The four rifles at a glance

SKSMarksman, semi automaticRecon 5, then $25,000$2,4003.85 kg
Mosin NagantSniper, bolt-actionRecon 10, then $50,000$4,5004.1 kg
SVDMarksman, semi automaticRecon 12, then $50,000$4,8005.3 kg
SV98Sniper, bolt-action, magazine fedRecon 18, then $100,000$5,2005.8 kg

The price is what each rifle costs when you deploy with it. Losing a $5,200 rifle repeatedly hurts, so factor that in.

SKS: the budget starting point

The SKS is the first rifle on the Recon track that feels like a proper upgrade. It is semi automatic, so a missed first shot is not fatal. One third-party comparison lists its full-damage range at about 400 m, which suits mid-range work. It is also the cheapest of the four to lose.

Its weakness is stopping power after the Season 2 cuts. Treat it as the rifle that gets you to the SVD or a bolt-action, not as a long-term choice. A cheap bipod helps: the SKS Bipod unlocks at Recon 7 for $10,000.

SVD: the best all-rounder

The SVD is the one we would suggest for most mid-range players. One stats site lists it holding full damage out to roughly 800 m, double the SKS, and it is faster to kill with at close range. It stays semi automatic, so you can correct a miss quickly.

Two cautions:

  • It costs $4,800 per deployment, twice the SKS.
  • The SVD's 5-round starting magazine is a common complaint before the 10-round unlock. Expect to reload more often until you have that upgrade.

SV98: for patient, accurate players

The SV98 is a bolt-action with magazine feed. Reports say it carries ten rounds against the Mosin's five, which means fewer interruptions in a long hold. Several sources name it the best all-round sniper in Season 2. One calls it "the best all-round sniper in WARDOGS Season 2".

The trade-off is follow-up speed. You get one good shot, then a cycle, so a missed first shot lets the enemy find cover or return fire. Pick it if you enjoy that rhythm and can find a safe position. If a fight reaches your position, a bolt-action is a poor tool.

Mosin Nagant: cheaper, but restricted

The Mosin fires the same round as the SV98 and is $700 cheaper. Season 2 added the PU 91/30 Scope for it, at level 10 and $12.5k. Reports say the Mosin is now limited to that 3.5x optic, which caps how far you can comfortably use it. That is not a problem at mid-range, but it is why many players move on to the SV98 when they can afford it.

Optics and attachments for mid-range

You do not need maximum magnification for mid-range work. Too much zoom makes you slow to find moving targets and easy to lose track of the wider fight.

  • 6x Precision Rifle Scope ($680, no unlock needed): fits the SKS, SVD and SV98. A solid default.
  • 1x-6x LPVO Short Dot ($860, Recon 11, then $15,000): fits the same rifles and gives you a low setting for close fights and 6x for longer ones.
  • Deadeye Flash Hider ($400, Recon 6): fits the SKS, SVD, Mosin Nagant and SV98.
  • Hexagon 762 Suppressor ($1,180, Recon 15): fits the SKS, SVD, Mosin Nagant and SV98.
  • Bipods: the SVD Bipod ($1,120, Recon 14) and SV98 Bipod ($1,250, Recon 21) are worth having if you hold positions. The SV98 Bipod price was cut in Season 2 to $17.5k to unlock.

Technique that matters more than the rifle

Zero for the distance you expect

Zeroing sets the range your sight is calibrated to. Reports from Season 1 say the default zero is roughly 100 m, and that you can change it with Page Up and Page Down. If you fight at 300 m, set the zero accordingly instead of guessing the holdover. Not every rifle adjusts the same way, so test yours before a live match.

Use ammo to solve armour

Armoured targets are the usual reason a mid-range rifle feels weak. The 7.62x54mm Armor Piercing round (SVD, SV98, Mosin) costs $90 and needs no unlock. It is not a damage fix for everything: AP does less to unarmoured body parts, so choose it only when you expect armour. Hollow Point (7.62x54mm, $55) does the reverse, with extra damage against flesh but less against armour.

Know your range

A Range Finder (Recon 8, then $25,000, $1,450 per deployment) gives an accurate distance reading. That takes the guesswork out of holdover. Use it for a few engagements, then learn the usual distances on your favourite maps.

Keep a backup

A sidearm and a way to heal are not optional. With a bolt-action, you will occasionally be flanked. Carry bandages and move after two shots instead of waiting for a third.

Common mistakes

  • Zooming in too far. You lose the surrounding fight and miss people closing on you.
  • Staying in one spot. The enemy will find you eventually, particularly with a visible muzzle flash.
  • Buying the most expensive rifle first. If losing it makes you play timidly, you gain nothing.
  • Ignoring your zero. Many "missed" shots are a wrong zero, not a bad aim.

Which one should you pick?

  • Still climbing Recon, short on cash: SKS, then move on.
  • Want one rifle for most situations: SVD.
  • Like deliberate, precise shooting and have the cash: SV98.
  • Want a bolt-action cheaply: Mosin Nagant, accepting the 3.5x scope.

Season 2 also added the M14 at Recon 25, but that is a longer climb. Find out more in WARDOGS Season 2 weapons.
