Parachutes are one of the few items in WARDOGS that you either need or don't, and the cost of getting it wrong is a long walk back from the respawn. Season 2 also changed how they behave, so older advice you find online may now be out of date. This guide covers what each parachute does, how to buy and use one, and how to avoid the new fall-damage trap.
Do you actually need one?
Soldiers do not carry a parachute by default, so you have to buy one before the drop. It sits in the Traversal slot, and it is only useful if you are going to leave a helicopter in mid-air.
If you are driving, walking out of a compound or taking a ground vehicle, a parachute is dead weight. Save it for helicopter insertions, ideally with a pilot you know. If you are new to flying or riding as a passenger, our helicopter basics guide is a good companion to this one.
Basic Parachute vs Sport Parachute
| Basic Parachute | Sport Parachute | |
|---|---|---|
| Price (Season 2) | $500 | $700 |
| Weight | 2.5 kg | 9 kg |
| Unlock | None needed | Wardog level 34, then $25,000 |
| Deployment | Manual, single use | Manual, single use |
| Steering | No | Yes |
The prices and unlock details come from the in-game shop. The Season 2 patch notes confirm the Basic Parachute rose from $100 to $500, while the Sport Parachute fell from $1,000 to $700. They also confirm the Sport Parachute unlock moved from level 35 to level 34. Some older guides still quote the previous prices and level.
What the Basic Parachute does
It drops straight down with no control, so the landing spot is decided the moment you pull. Your exit point matters more than anything you do afterwards. Agree a marker with your pilot and jump over the place you want to land.
What the Sport Parachute does
The Sport Parachute converts height into horizontal distance and lets you choose a landing point. You steer with your normal look and movement inputs. That makes it much better for landing beside an objective, avoiding fire or covering some distance away from a flight path. It is also much heavier, so check the weight in the loadout builder before you commit.
With the gap between the two now only $200, the Sport Parachute is the better buy once you have unlocked it. The Basic is still a sensible choice if you are below level 34 or only want a cheap emergency exit.
How to buy and equip one
- Speak to the Equipment Vendor in a safe area. See our safe zones guide if you are unsure where that is.
- Open the Gear tab and choose Traversal.
- Select your parachute. If you have no backpack equipped, the vendor may block the sale until you add one.
- Check your inventory or loadout screen and confirm the parachute shows as equipped.
One caution on the backpack point: a source describing the Scout Backpack as a working fix was written before Season 2. I could not confirm whether the free Pouch also satisfies the requirement. If the shop shows a backpack prompt, follow it and check the total price before you pay.
Parachutes are single use and you buy them again for each life, so factor that into your budget. The Season 2 price rise makes this more noticeable than it was.
Controls: deploy and cut
On the default PC layout, Deploy Parachute is Space and Cut Parachute is C. These come from community keybind lists, as BULKHEAD has not published an official control list, so check your own controls menu.
- The prompt is contextual. A missing prompt while standing on a rooftop or sitting in a helicopter is normal.
- Jump, wait until you are actually falling, then deploy.
- Cutting collapses the chute and drops you the rest of the way, but still spends the parachute.
The Season 2 change that catches people out
This is the part to remember. According to the Season 2 patch notes:
- Parachutes now take longer to fully open, and won't open at all below about 10m.
- If you are falling fast and open below roughly 50m, you won't slow down in time and will take fall damage.
In practice, that means the old habit of pulling at the last second no longer works. Deploy early, with plenty of height to spare, and treat 50m as a minimum rather than a target. Those figures are approximate, so give yourself extra room. In a helicopter, it is better to exit a little high and accept a slightly slower descent than to be caught low.
Cutting the canopy is also riskier than it was. Some pre-Season 2 guides advise cutting just above the ground to avoid being a slow target. I have not found tested advice on how that interacts with the new fall damage. Cut only if you are high enough that the remaining drop is clearly survivable, or if being shot at under the canopy is the bigger danger.
Common mistakes
- Not buying one before boarding. There is no way to get one mid-flight.
- Pulling too late. This is now the most likely cause of a death that feels unfair.
- Jumping over the wrong place. A Basic Parachute cannot correct a bad exit point.
- Wearing a heavy kit with the Sport Parachute. It weighs 9 kg, so plan the rest of your loadout around it.
- Rebinding Space and losing the deploy key. See below.
If Deploy Parachute does nothing
The commonest reason is that no parachute is equipped, so check that first. If one is equipped and Space does nothing in the air, you may have hit a known keybind problem. Rebinding a helicopter control, most often the collective, to Space can strip the key from Deploy Parachute. This mostly affects pilots.
Start by checking the controls menu. A community keybind page says the action now appears under Settings, Controls, Keybindings, where you can give it a key again. If you cannot find it there, a community workaround is to close the game, open GameUserSettings.ini in your Wardogs config folder, find the line containing DeployParachute and delete it, then relaunch. That file lives at C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Wardogs\Saved\Config\WindowsClient\GameUserSettings.ini. It is not an official fix, so copy the file somewhere safe first.
Whatever you do, test your bindings somewhere harmless before relying on them over a contested zone. Squad nights are a good time to practise drops with friends, because a few rehearsed jumps from a friendly pilot will teach you the safe height far more cheaply than a real match.
Quick checklist
- Buy a parachute before you board, and confirm it is equipped.
- Pick the Sport Parachute if you have reached level 34 and want to choose your landing.
- Agree a drop marker with the pilot.
- Deploy well above 50m, and never plan to open close to the ground.
- Check your Deploy and Cut bindings after any control changes.
